Sensex rises up 156 pts; L&T, Axis Bank rally

Indian benchmark indices continued to trade higher tracking gains in L&T, Axis Bank and Infosys, despite massive selloff in global equities.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Axis Bank were the top gainers in the Sensex pack, rising up to 2.77 per cent, after the companies posted positive quarterly numbers.

According to traders, despite selloff in other Asian equities amid fears of contagion after a deadly new virus emerged from China, stock-specific action kept domestic benchmarks buoyed.

Bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul were trading significantly lower.

At 10:30 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 41271.87 up by 156.49 points or by 0.38 % and then NSE Nifty was at 12163.3 up by 56.4 points or by 0.47 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 41377.35 and intraday low of 41098.91 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 12179.05 and intraday low of 12094.1

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1323.90,+2.29%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 727.15,+2.02%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 118.40,+1.67%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 781.00,+1.44%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 113.80,+1.43%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 198.00,-0.78%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 772.50,-0.72%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1768.20,-0.57%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 2040.95,-0.50%), Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 4122.45,-0.44%), among others.

Among the sectors, CGS index was at 17377.91 up by 311.34 points or by 1.82%. Bharat Electronics Ltd. (Rs. 104.10,+3.17%), Sadbhav Engineering Ltd. (Rs. 134.95,+2.62%), NBCC (India) Ltd. (Rs. 36.60,+2.38%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1324.30,+2.32%), V-Guard Industries Ltd. (Rs. 228.40,+1.49%),.

FMCG index was at 11829.46 down by 4.56 points or by 0.04%. Agro Tech Foods Ltd. (Rs. 680.00,-4.59%), Dalmia Bharat Sugar and Industries Ltd. (Rs. 122.85,-2.65%), VST Industries Ltd. (Rs. 4497.00,-2.34%), Gujarat Ambuja Exports Ltd. (Rs. 159.00,-1.97%), JK Agri Genetics Ltd. (Rs. 446.55,-1.17%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 1972 , shares advanced were 1199 while 665 shares declined and 108 were unchanged.
