Sensex, Nifty marginally in red; Bank stocks weigh

Benchmark indices were trading in red on Tuesday after the consumer price index (CPI)-based inflation print jumped to over five-and-half year high of 7.35 per cent in December.

Retail inflation jumped sharply to 7.35 per cent in December 2019, surpassing the RBI's comfort level, mainly due to high food prices, a government data showed on Monday.

The retail inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 2.11 per cent in December 2018 and 5.54 per cent in November 2019.

At 9:35 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 41805.19 down by -54.5 points or by -0.13 % and then NSE Nifty was at 12326.35 down by -3.2 points or by -0.03 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 41883.09 and intraday low of 41770.9 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 12335.35 and intraday low of 12308.7

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 500.60,+1.02%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 560.25,+0.95%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 591.50,+0.87%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1820.00,+0.82%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 448.15,+0.75%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 534.70,-0.71%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1278.55,-0.68%), UltraTech Cement Ltd. (Rs. 4440.05,-0.63%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 1983.95,-0.55%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 124.80,-0.52%), among others.

Among the sectors, Metal index was at 10777.15 up by 108.06 points or by 1.01%. Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Ltd. (Rs. 51.25,+2.50%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 164.05,+2.21%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 282.75,+1.47%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 214.10,+1.42%), NMDC Ltd. (Rs. 124.80,+1.30%),.

On the flip side, Bankex index was at 36545.69 down by -135.23 points or by -0.37%. YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 40.50,-3.80%), RBL Bank Ltd. (Rs. 353.90,-1.19%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 534.70,-0.71%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1279.35,-0.61%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1684.10,-0.42%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 1414 , shares advanced were 902 while 438 shares declined and 74 were unchanged.
