Sensex, Nifty open flat; Biocon gains 2%

Indian benchmark indices traded flat on Tuesday as investors booked profit and stayed cautious ahead of the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) fifth monetary policy meet that begins today. Biocon, Yes Bank, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Auto, SBI, Kotak Mahindra Bank, M&M are among major gainers on the Indices, while losers are Hindalco, Grasim, Vodafone Idea and Motherson Sumi.

At 9:30 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 40762.08 down by -40.09 points or by -0.1 % and then NSE Nifty was at 12029.35 down by -18.85 points or by -0.16 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 40885.03 and intraday low of 40720.45 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 12068.6 and intraday low of 12020.35.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 162.60,+0.99%), YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 64.55,+0.78%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 3183.60,+0.74%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2422.65,+0.70%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 752.80,+0.64%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 412.50,-1.97%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 142.15,-1.73%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1562.80,-0.85%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 454.75,-0.83%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 127.10,-0.82%), among others.

Among the sectors, CDS index was at 24855.9 up by 127.88 points or by 0.52%. Voltas Ltd. (Rs. 701.75,+1.01%), VIP Industries Ltd. (Rs. 429.15,+1.00%), Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 254.00,+0.91%), Whirlpool of India Ltd. (Rs. 2176.75,+0.65%), Blue Star Ltd. (Rs. 801.00,+0.57%),.

Metal index was at 9675.34 down by -134.01 points or by -1.37%. NMDC Ltd. (Rs. 103.15,-2.23%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 155.85,-2.23%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 412.50,-1.97%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 197.15,-1.79%), Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Ltd. (Rs. 38.75,-1.77%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 1165 , shares advanced were 607 while 490 shares declined and 68 were unchanged.
