Pre Session: Sensex, Nifty to open flat; GAIL shares in focus

Indian equity indices are expected to open almost flat on Tuesday as the United States has decided “not to reissue waivers” on import of Iranian oil. Asian shares were little changed on Tuesday, hovering not far from nine-month peaks hit last week, with concerns China may slow the pace of policy easing curbing the market's enthusiasm. The US stocks ended almost flat during the overnight trade on Monday ahead of Q4 results by major companies including Amazon, Boeing and Facebook. Back home, flat trends on the SGX Nifty Index Futures for April delivery, which were trading at 11,626.00, up by 9.50 points or 0.08 per cent, at 10:59 AM, Singapore Time, also indicated a flat start for local bourses. On the macro front, the RBI's move to hold dollar-swap auctions and inject durable liquidity into the system has made it easier for NBFCs to borrow expansion funds through overseas bond sales. This funding avenue has become even more attractive after the central bank announced three dollar-swap auctions of $5 billion each. RBI received bids for $16.3 billion compared with $5 billion, the sum targeted in the last auction to ensure that the banking system had enough liquidity. On the corporate front, GAIL has emerged as the highest bidder for seven operating wind power plants of Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS) having a total generation capacity of 874 megawatts. Private equity major Blackstone said on Monday it was making its largest investment in the consumer sector in India by picking up a 51 per cent stake in Essel Propack for up to Rs 3,211 crore ($460 million). On the earnings front, as many as 15 companies are slated to release their March quarter earnings today. Prominent among them include ACC, Indiabulls Real Estate, Indiabulls Integrated Services, ICICI Securities, Bharat Seats, Coromandel International, Menon Bearings, Nucleus Software Exports, Sasken Technologies, Soril Infra Resources, Sterlite Technologies, Tata Global Beverages, Ushdev International. The 30-share index settled at 38645.18 down by -495.1 points or by -1.26 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 11594.45 down by -158.35 points or by -1.35 per cent.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 133.38 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 27098.92 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 342286 with a total turnover of Rs. 25430.47 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 1309269 with a total turnover of Rs. 79485.36 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 9668492 with a total turnover of Rs. 678433.16 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 1010474 with a total turnover of Rs. 63948.58 Crore.

As on April 22, 2019, the FIIs stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 7734.41 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 652.10 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 6649.65 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 239.61 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 1084.76 Crore and Rs. 412.49.
