Post Session: Sensex crashes over 750 pts; Nifty ends below 10,300

Indian benchmark indices settled over 2 per cent lower on Thursday as global indices witnessed across-the-board losses after investor sentiment was hit by heavy sell-off in world markets. Continuous outflows by foreign funds also added to investor woes.

Asian stocks ended lower and European stocks too slumped to over 18-month low in their early session Thursday, tracking overnight worst losses in eight months on the Wall Street Wednesday.

In the forex market, the rupee, after hitting yet another record low of 74.50 against the dollar in early deals, turned positive in late afternoon trade and was quoting 24 paise higher at 74 as Brent crude slipped below the USD 82 a barrel and dollar weakened overseas.

Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) offloaded shares worth Rs 1,096 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased shares worth a net Rs 1,893 crore Wednesday, provisional data showed.

The 30-share benchmark index ended at 34001.15 down by 759.74 points or by 2.19 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 10234.65 down by 225.45 points or by 2.16 per cent.

During the day’s trade, Sensex touched intraday high of 34325.18 and intraday low of 33723.53 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10335.95 and intraday low of 10138.6.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were State Bank of India (Rs. 262.15,-5.74%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 556.25,-4.60%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 208.25,-4.45%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 730.20,-4.44%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 675.00,-3.61%), among others.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 152.90,+2.86%), YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 240.00,+2.54%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 1538.50,+0.75%), among others.

Among the sectors, Metal index was at 12605.8 down by -493.51 points or by -3.77%. Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 167.05,-8.26%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 556.25,-4.60%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 216.80,-4.56%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 208.25,-4.45%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 361.25,-3.95%),.

Further, IT index was at 14413.7 down by -477.93 points or by -3.21%. NIIT Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1057.45,-11.54%), Infibeam Avenues Ltd. (Rs. 52.15,-10.78%), Cyient Ltd. (Rs. 638.00,-6.06%), Trigyn Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 78.45,-5.31%), L&T Technology Services Ltd. (Rs. 1374.80,-5.25%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2905 , shares advanced were 901 while 1846 shares declined and 158 were unchanged.
