Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty trade marginally higher; realty, capital goods stocks up 1%

Amidst choppy trade, the Indian benchmarks were trading in positive terrain with marginal gains in absence of any major development on the domestic or global front. Markets across Asia were trading mixed after the Wall Street ended on soft note in overnight trade as investors digested the Republicans' tax-reform plan and nomination of Jerome Powell as the next Federal Reserve Governor by the US President Donald Trump.

At 12:22 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 33631.18, up by 57.96 points or by 0.17 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 10440.2, up by 16.4 points or by 0.16 per cent.

In the day’s trade so far, the Sensex touched intraday high of 33692.58 and intraday low of 33531.94, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10461.7 and intraday low of 10403.6.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 538.55,+1.59%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1227.90,+1.39%), Cipla Ltd. (Rs. 640.80,+1.14%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 189.95,+1.04%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 548.65,+1.02%), among others.

On the flip side, Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 288.35,-1.13%), Lupin Ltd. (Rs. 1049.50,-1.07%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3693.00,-1.07%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 557.80,-0.96%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1324.00,-0.84%), were among top losers on BSE.

On the sectoral front, realty and capital goods stocks emerged as top gainers, rising as much as 1.07 per cent and 1.01 per cent, respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2748, shares advanced were 1504 while 1105 shares declined and 139 were unchanged.
