AMFI’s Semi Annual Classification Review for January 2021

The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) has released the latest list of stocks as per market capital (m-cap) classification. This new classification is based on 30 December, 2020 data which will be effective from February to July 2021. As per the Circular released by SEBI on 06-Oct-17, Indian Mutual Funds Schemes have to be strictly categorized into below baskets with a well-defined classification:
Large Cap: 1st -100th companies
Mid Cap: 101st -250th companies
Small Cap: 251st onwards companies
Highlights as per the release:
- December 2020 cut off for Large Cap stocks was up 8.3 per cent to Rs.28897 crore and for Mid Cap, it was up 21 per cent at Rs.8389 crore as compared to June 2020.
- Large Cap stocks attribute 73.68%, Mid Cap stocks attribute 15.41% whereas Small Cap stocks attribute 10.91% of the total market cap.
- With full market cap, the Large Cap classification has highest exposure to BFSI (25.3%), Consumer (17%), IT (16.6%) and Oil & Gas (15%) sector.

Next review will be due in July 2021 based on data from 1 January to 30 June, 2021. This usually leads to churning in various mutual fund schemes based on any stock “new category”.
